Local Pickup and Delivery on Etsy: No Built-In Option, and the Three Rules That Need Tracking
2026-10-07
Etsy has no built-in local pickup or delivery option. You may offer either, but if a buyer outside your area buys a pickup-only item, Etsy says you must ship it or refund and cancel the order. A pickup order also has no tracking, and three Etsy rules key on tracking: Star Seller shipping, Purchase Protection, and the release of a Payment account reserve.
Every rule below is quoted from Etsy’s Help Center and Etsy’s policy pages, read on 7 October 2026. Each page’s last-edited date is given, because the core pickup article is the oldest page in the set.
Does Etsy have a local pickup option?
No. Etsy’s article How to Offer Local Pickup or Delivery (last edited 7 February 2024) opens with: “Etsy doesn’t have a built-in tool for offering local pickup or delivery to your buyers.” Sellers are “welcome to offer these services,” and Etsy recommends that “your listings and policies clearly state that your items are only for local pickup/delivery.”
If you offer pickup alongside shipping, Etsy says to mention it “in your shop announcement, listings, and/or the FAQ section of your shop policies.” The buyer contacts you before buying, and “if you both agree to pickup, you can remove the shipping charges on the listing and then reserve it for the buyer.”
How do you reserve a listing for a pickup buyer?
With a private custom listing. In Etsy’s pickup article, the words “reserve it for the buyer” link to How to Offer Custom Items (last edited 16 December 2025). That article says a custom listing “won’t appear in your public shop or in search, which means that other buyers won’t be able to purchase it.”
You create it “directly from the original Custom Request Message thread,” or, if the buyer wrote a regular message, with Create custom order and then Send private listing. Two limits from the same article: “It’s not possible to choose a calculated shipping profile for custom orders,” and private listings “cannot be created for digital items.” Once it sells, the listing appears on your public Sold Items page. The fee side, a $0.20 listing fee charged only if the buyer purchases, is covered in how Etsy custom orders and private listings work.
What happens if someone outside your area buys a pickup-only item?
You ship it, or you refund and cancel. Etsy’s wording: “If a buyer outside of your local area purchases your item, you must either ship the order or refund and cancel the order. Failure to do so may result in the suspension of your selling privileges.” The article names no other option.
How do you complete a pickup order without tracking?
Mark it as having no tracking. Etsy’s How to Add Tracking and Complete an Order (last edited 6 October 2026) says that for an order without tracking, “such as if it’s a digital item or an item for local pickup,” you select This order doesn’t have tracking and choose a reason.
For US sellers, Etsy says “adding tracking information is required to complete an order.” The same article lists four cases where tracking is not required:
- Digital downloads, including custom digital items
- Customized order additions linked to another order
- Orders being delivered through local pickup
- The shipping of oversized and heavy items
Hand delivery to the buyer’s door is not on that list by name. For anything not listed, Etsy says you can choose the no-tracking option and “add a quick explanation for why you can’t add tracking.”
Do pickup and delivery orders count toward Star Seller?
Not for shipping. Etsy’s Star Seller progress article (last edited 4 May 2026) says orders “delivered or picked up in person are considered shipped without tracking, and do not meet the Star Seller criteria for shipping.” The Smooth shipping badge needs at least 95% of orders shipped on time with tracking.
The pickup article adds: “we’re unable to make exceptions for local pickup orders.”
The same Star Seller article sets tracking requirements by order value, counted on the items before discounts, excluding shipping and taxes:
| Currency | Orders that need tracking or an Etsy label |
|---|---|
| GBP | £10 and above |
| EUR | €10 and above |
| CAD | $15 and above |
| AUD | $15 and above |
| All other currencies, including USD | All orders |
The article does not say how a pickup order under the threshold is counted, for example a £6 order in a UK shop. The value table sets no tracking requirement below £10, and the pickup answer makes no exception for low values. If many of your pickup orders are small, check the shipping breakdown in your Customer service stats.
The badge is not a direct search factor. Etsy’s What is the “Star Seller” Badge? (last edited 17 April 2026) says: “Star Seller badges do not directly impact your search ranking.” What does feed search on the customer-service side is covered in does customer service affect Etsy search ranking.
Is a pickup order covered by Etsy Purchase Protection?
Not under the tracking condition. Etsy’s What is Etsy’s Purchase Protection for Sellers? (last edited 9 July 2026) lists the eligibility requirements, including: “Valid tracking was provided and/or it was mailed out with a shipping label purchased through Etsy.” A pickup order has neither, and “sellers are responsible for refunding costs for orders that fall outside of these eligibility requirements.”
Etsy’s Cases Policy (last updated 9 June 2026) separately lists “items that are purchased in person” as ineligible for the case system. “In person” appears once in that policy and is not defined, so it does not say whether an order paid through Etsy checkout and collected in person counts.
What the pickup article recommends instead is proof: “a signed receipt, a photograph of the delivery, or a Message sent by the buyer confirming receipt of the order.” Who pays when a covered order goes wrong is in Etsy Purchase Protection for sellers.
Does a Payment account reserve hold pickup sales longer?
Yes, if your account has a reserve. Etsy’s What is a Payment Account Reserve? (last edited 29 July 2026) says reserved funds are released when tracking shows the order in transit, or, “if no tracking has been provided by the seller,” when “a default holding period of time has passed.”
The same page: “If we can’t determine an order is in transit, the funds will be reserved for the full period displayed in your Payment account.” Among the risk factors Etsy lists for placing a reserve: “Orders are consistently missing tracking information or tracking events.” Sales of digital items are not held in reserve. How reserved funds sit in your pending balance is covered in Etsy pending balance and when deposits pay out.
Can a local buyer pay cash or a delivery fee at handover?
No. Etsy’s Off-Platform Transactions Policy (last updated 5 October 2026) bans “naming an off-platform payment method (e.g., Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, cash, cryptocurrency) as a way to pay for an item,” and “charging extra after checkout for shipping, returns, duties, taxes, customs, or any other fee not included in the original Etsy transaction.” A delivery charge has to be in the Etsy transaction.
The same policy bans sharing a phone number, email or social handle “for the purpose of completing a transaction off Etsy.” It does not mention arranging a pickup for an order already paid on Etsy. Arranging time and place in Etsy Messages avoids the question, and leaves the written confirmation the pickup article suggests keeping.
Can local buyers find your shop by location?
Etsy’s two pages describe this differently. How to Add or Edit Your Shop’s Location (last edited 6 May 2026) has you type a city and says that “adding a location helps your shop and listings appear in local searches.” The buyer-side article How to Search for Items and Shops on Etsy (last edited 2 October 2025) describes the Shop Location filter as: “choose your country.”
Neither page describes a city-level search filter for buyers. Set your city anyway, and put “local pickup” and your town in the listing text a local buyer will read. The full list of filters that can drop a listing from results is in Etsy’s search filters don’t rank your listing.
What don’t Etsy’s pages say about local pickup?
Three questions are left open by the page that should answer each one:
- Whether hand delivery has its own no-tracking reason. The list in the tracking article names local pickup only.
- How small pickup orders count for Star Seller in GBP, EUR, CAD and AUD shops, where the value thresholds apply.
- Whether “purchased in person” in the Cases Policy includes an Etsy order collected in person.
A local pickup checklist
- State pickup-only in the listing and in your shop policies. If a buyer outside your area checks out anyway, Etsy says you ship or you refund and cancel.
- For an agreed pickup, send a private custom listing with the shipping charge removed. Calculated shipping profiles are not available on it.
- Keep the whole price in Etsy checkout. No cash at handover, and no delivery fee added after checkout.
- Arrange the handover in Etsy Messages and ask the buyer to confirm receipt there.
- Complete the order with This order doesn’t have tracking and choose the local pickup reason, or explain a hand delivery.
- Expect pickup orders to miss Star Seller’s shipping criteria and the tracking condition of Purchase Protection.
- If your account has a reserve, expect each pickup sale’s reserved share to wait the full holding period shown in your Payment account.
Where the listings come in
For a pickup-only item, the listing text is where Etsy wants the terms stated. The generator drafts a title inside Etsy’s 140 characters with the main keyword in the first 40, 13 tags of up to 20 characters, and a description you can add your pickup terms to. The bulk generator takes up to 25 products per submission.
