Etsy Custom Orders: The Private Listing Fee Is Only Charged If the Buyer Pays
2026-09-16
A normal Etsy listing costs $0.20 the moment you publish it, whether it ever sells or not. A private listing for a custom order costs the same $0.20, but Etsy only adds it to your Payment account "if the specified buyer purchases the item." A quote the buyer walks away from costs you nothing in listing fees.
That line sits in Etsy’s fee table; the Help Center article on custom orders does not mention fees at all. Everything below is quoted from four Etsy Help Center pages: How to Offer Custom Items, How to Request a Personalized or Custom Item, What are the Fees and Taxes for Selling on Etsy? and How to Manage Your Digital Listings, all read on 16 September 2026.
How do you turn on custom orders on Etsy?
In Shop Manager, go to Settings → Options, set Custom order requests to Enabled and save. Etsy then adds a Request Custom Order button to your shop homepage. Two conditions apply: your shop has to be open to the public, and the setting "can only be enabled on Etsy.com," not in the app.
The button is not the only way in. Etsy tells buyers who don’t see it that the seller "might still be able to accommodate you" and to try Messages instead, and it tells buyers who want a variation on something you already sell to send the request from the Message seller button on that listing. So a shop with the setting off still receives custom requests. It just receives them as ordinary messages.
Where do custom order requests show up?
In one of two places, depending on history. Etsy says a request that starts a new conversation lands in your Custom Requests folder, while one that continues an existing message thread goes to your Inbox. A request added to a conversation you already have with that buyer will not appear in the folder, so check both.
The Request Custom Order message asks the buyer for two things: a description of what they want and "the date they need it by (if there is a deadline)." Etsy’s buyer-side article also coaches buyers to attach an image, ask how the price depends on "time, materials, or other details," and discuss how long the item will take.
How do you create a private listing for a custom order?
Agree the details and the price first, then create the listing "directly from the original Custom Request Message thread." If the request came in as a regular message, Etsy’s route is to select Create custom order inside that message, fill in the required fields and choose Send private listing.
Once it is published, Etsy emails the buyer "a button to purchase the listing," and the buyer can add it to their cart from the request page or from the private listing page. On your side the listing appears on your Listings page labelled Private. Etsy’s reason for routing payment this way, given to buyers, is that "the seller has a record of the transaction, and you have a safe and secure way to pay for the item."
What does a custom order cost in Etsy fees?
The listing fee is $0.20 per private listing, added only when the named buyer purchases. The rest of the sale is charged like any other order: Etsy’s fee table sets the transaction fee at 6.5% of the total order amount, shipping and gift wrap included, and lists no exception for private listings.
Payment processing is charged on top, at "a set rate plus a percent of the total sale price," and Etsy says that rate varies by country. Price a commission with all three in mind: a quote that covers materials and hours but not the 6.5% on the shipping you charge is quietly short. The full per-sale arithmetic is in what Etsy actually takes per sale, and what happens to those fees if the commission goes wrong after payment is in do you get Etsy fees back when you refund.
Can other shoppers see a private listing?
Not before it sells. Etsy states the listing "won’t appear in your public shop or in search," so no other buyer can purchase it. After the sale that changes: the listing "will appear on your public Sold Items page with your other sold listings."
That has a practical consequence for how you fill it in. Whatever title and photos you give the private listing are what a stranger browsing your sold items will eventually see. A title like "Custom order for Sarah, wedding 12 June" puts a buyer’s name and date on a public page. Write the private listing the way you would write a public one: describe the item, and keep the buyer’s personal details in Messages.
Do custom orders help your Etsy search ranking?
The private listing itself cannot rank, because Etsy keeps it out of search entirely. Its title and tags have no search job to do. Whether the completed sale feeds your shop’s standing in any other way, Etsy’s custom-items article does not say.
What does rank is the public listing a good commission can turn into. If the same request keeps arriving (the same sign with different names, the same portrait style with a different pet), that is demand you can list publicly, where a title and 13 tags do have a job. Whether that repeat product should be one listing with options or several listings is its own decision, covered in Etsy variations versus separate listings.
What are the limits on Etsy custom orders?
Etsy’s custom-items article names three hard limits. The maximum processing time on a custom order is 6–8 weeks. You cannot choose a calculated shipping profile for a custom order "at this time." And private listings cannot be created for digital items at all.
- 6–8 weeks is the longest processing time the listing can carry. A commission that genuinely takes longer, like a large quilt or a hand-carved piece, needs that conversation before the private listing exists, because the listing cannot state a longer time. How processing time turns into the delivery date buyers see is covered in Etsy processing time and estimated delivery dates.
- No calculated shipping means a custom order’s shipping price is one you set by hand. For an oversized or unusually heavy commission, weigh and price the parcel before you quote.
- No digital private listings rules out commissioned digital work through this route, and Etsy points to a different mechanism instead.
How do you sell a custom digital file on Etsy?
With a made-to-order digital listing, which is public, not private. Choose Digital files under "What type of item is it?", then Made To Order in the "When did you make it?" dropdown. No file is uploaded when you list; you attach up to five files of 20MB each when you complete the order.
Two differences from a private custom order follow from the listing being public. Any shopper can buy it, so the listing has to describe what you will make and what you need from the buyer before they pay. And the ordinary listing fee applies, which Etsy’s fee table says is added "when an item is listed," whether or not a commission ever comes in. The completion steps, the file types Etsy accepts and the no-variations rule are covered in Etsy digital download listing rules.
Custom order, made-to-order digital, or a public listing with options?
The three mechanisms differ on who can buy, when the $0.20 is charged and whether the listing can be found. Etsy’s own dividing line between a variation and a custom listing is that variations are "available for any buyer," while a custom listing "is only available for the buyer who made the request."
| Private custom listing | Made-to-order digital listing | Public listing with personalization or variations | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who can buy | Only the buyer who requested it | Any shopper | Any shopper |
| In Etsy search | No; appears on Sold Items after purchase | Yes | Yes |
| $0.20 listing fee | Only if the buyer purchases | When listed | When listed |
| Physical or digital | Physical only | Digital only | Either; digital items cannot have variations |
| Stated limits | 6–8 weeks max processing; no calculated shipping | Up to 5 files, 20MB each, uploaded at completion | Standard listing rules |
Between personalization and variations, Etsy draws the line on inventory: whether the choice the buyer makes changes what you hold in stock. That test, with Etsy’s examples, is in Etsy custom options and personalization fields.
When a commission becomes a product
A private listing is written for one reader who already agreed to buy. The public listing that replaces a repeated commission is written for search, and that is where the text fields start to matter. ListingLoom writes them to Etsy’s limits: a title inside 140 characters with the main keyword in the first 40, and 13 tags each under 20 characters. The free plan covers 400 generations a month, and the free listing checker needs no account. If a run of commissions has turned into a whole range, the bulk generator takes up to 25 products in one submission on the $19/mo Bulk plan.
Before your next quote, check the three limits against the job: within eight weeks, a shipping price you can set by hand, and a physical item. If one of them fails, choose the mechanism that fits before you promise the buyer anything.
