Etsy’s Printed Items Test: Buyers Can Order Prints of Your Digital Files From Another Shop
2026-10-09
Etsy is testing a feature that lets a buyer who purchased one of your digital files order it as a printed item (a poster, mug, canvas, tote bag and so on) from Ventur Editions, a third-party print provider, in a separate checkout. Etsy says eligible sellers, which are limited to shops based in the US or Canada, are “included in this test automatically.” The opt-out is shop-wide: Shop Manager → Settings → Options → Allow buyers to purchase digital prints → Disabled. None of Etsy’s three pages on the test says whether the seller of the file is paid anything for the print.
Everything below is quoted from three Etsy Help Center pages, read on 9 October 2026: How Printed Items From Digital Purchases Work for Sellers (created 14 September 2026, last edited 24 September 2026), the buyer-side How to Order a Printed Item From a Digital File on Etsy (18 September 2026), and the September 2026 entry on Etsy’s Newly Crafted updates page. The three passages come to fewer than 700 words, and Etsy calls the feature a test, so expect them to change.
What is Etsy’s printed items test?
The seller article opens: “Etsy is testing a new way for buyers to turn eligible digital files they purchase on Etsy’s website into printed items.” After buying an eligible file, the buyer “may see an option to order it as a printed item through a separate checkout on Etsy.” The buyer picks a product, selects the file, previews the result and places a separate order.
On the buyer’s side, the option is a View print options link on “post-purchase pages such as the digital file’s order confirmation.” Both articles put it after the purchase. Neither describes any change to your listing page, and the word “app” appears in neither: the seller article says purchases on “Etsy’s website,” the buyer article says “Etsy.com.”
Who sells the print, and who handles problems with it?
Ventur Editions does. The buyer article is explicit: “Ventur Editions is the seller and you will be checking out from their shop,” and the print is “a new order from Ventur Editions, separate from the digital file you purchased from an Etsy seller.” The seller article adds that “the printed item has its own listing and reviews” and that “if there’s an issue with the order, Ventur Editions provides support.”
Three things follow for you, each stated by Etsy:
- No fulfillment work. Newly Crafted: “You won’t be responsible for producing or shipping the order.”
- Reviews of the print are not yours. Buyers are told to “review the Ventur Editions order” to share feedback on the print. How reviews on your own orders work is covered in how Etsy reviews work.
- Print problems go to Ventur Editions. Buyers are told to contact Ventur Editions “through your printed item order in Purchases and reviews.”
Is my shop included in the test?
Your digital listings “may be included in this test automatically” if all three of Etsy’s conditions apply:
- Your shop is based in the US or Canada.
- “You don’t already offer a physical version of the design or use your own print-on-demand integration.”
- “The file meets the print partner’s requirements for high-quality printing.”
Condition 2 leaves out a design you already sell in physical form, and a seller who uses their own print-on-demand integration. It does not say whether the integration test is applied per design or per shop. If you use a print-on-demand partner, Etsy’s disclosure rules for it are in Etsy’s production partner rules for print-on-demand.
The word “may” matters. None of the three pages lists the print partner’s file requirements, and none describes a way to see which of your listings are eligible. The only control Etsy documents is the shop-wide setting.
What can a buyer turn a digital file into?
The buyer article says print options “may include” nine products: indoor wall tapestries, framed posters, matte canvases, metal art signs, rolled posters, coffee mugs, canvas tote bags, greeting cards and a crewneck sweatshirt. Choices “will depend on your digital file and the item you select,” and the buyer is warned that the image “may be cropped slightly to fit the selected item.”
The file step has three choices: Use last purchase, select from Etsy purchases, or Upload from your computer. Etsy’s step does not say an uploaded file has to be an Etsy purchase.
Does the seller of the digital file earn anything from the print?
Etsy’s pages don’t say. Each of the three passages was searched for commission, royalty, earn, pay, payment, revenue and percent; none of the words appears. What the pages do say is that the print is Ventur Editions’ sale, from Ventur Editions’ shop, with its own listing and reviews. Newly Crafted describes the goal as making it “easier for buyers to enjoy your digital designs, without adding fulfillment work for you.”
Don’t read that silence as a yes or a no. If whether you earn from the print decides whether you stay in, ask Etsy Support before you decide, and keep the reply.
How do you opt out of Etsy’s digital prints test?
Etsy’s steps, from the seller article:
- On Etsy.com, go to Shop Manager.
- Select Settings, then Options.
- Go to Allow buyers to purchase digital prints and select Disabled.
The setting covers the whole shop: “For this test, the opt-out applies to your shop rather than individual listings.” You cannot keep one bestselling printable out and leave the rest in. The same Options page holds other shop-wide switches, including the EU setting in the Etsy setting that can hide your shop from Europe, so check that one while you are there.
What does opting out not stop?
Etsy answers this in one sentence: opting out “doesn’t prevent buyers from independently accessing Ventur Editions’ services with the content they’ve downloaded.” What the switch removes, in Etsy’s words, is print options “surfaced after purchases of your eligible listings.” A buyer who downloaded your file can still go to Ventur Editions directly.
Etsy’s other fixed rules for digital listings are in Etsy digital download rules.
Should you stay in or opt out?
| Your situation | What Etsy’s pages imply |
|---|---|
| Shop based outside the US or Canada | Not eligible under condition 1; nothing to do |
| You already sell physical versions of the design, or run your own print-on-demand integration | Not eligible under condition 2 |
| You plan to sell printed versions of your designs yourself | Until you list a physical version, an eligible file can still be offered as a Ventur Editions print; opting out stops that now |
| You want buyers’ printed copies reviewed and supported under your shop | The test can’t do that: Ventur Editions owns the listing, reviews and support |
| You only sell files and are happy for buyers to get prints elsewhere | Staying in adds no fulfillment work, per Newly Crafted |
If physical versions of your designs are on your roadmap, settle the third row now. Until you opt out or list a physical version, a buyer of an eligible file may be offered a print from Ventur Editions’ shop.
What don’t Etsy’s pages say about the test?
- Whether the file’s seller is paid anything from the print sale.
- Which listings are eligible, or how a seller is told their shop is in the test.
- The print partner’s file requirements.
- Whether print orders appear in your shop’s stats. None of the three pages mentions stats.
- How long the test runs, or whether it will reach shops outside the US and Canada.
A checklist for digital sellers
- Check where your shop is based. Only US and Canadian shops are eligible.
- Open Shop Manager → Settings → Options and find Allow buyers to purchase digital prints. Note whether it is Enabled.
- Decide for the whole shop. There is no per-listing setting.
- If seller pay decides it, ask Etsy Support, because none of Etsy’s three pages answers it.
- Re-read Etsy’s seller article every few weeks. It is a test, and the page was created on 14 September 2026.
Where the listings come in
The print option appears only after a sale, so the listing still has to win the digital sale first. The generator drafts a title inside Etsy’s 140 characters with the main keyword in the first 40 and 13 tags of up to 20 characters, and its digital toggle adds a block telling buyers what the file contains and how to download it in a browser. The bulk generator takes up to 25 products per submission.
