Etsy Combined Shipping: How Etsy Prices a Multi-Item Order, and the Settings That Get It Wrong
2026-09-18
Etsy does not add up shipping item by item. On fixed-price shipping it charges the single highest One item price in the order, then adds the Additional item price of everything else. Etsy’s own example: an item at $2.00/$0.50 plus an item at $1.00/$0.75 ships for $2.75, not $3.00.
That rule sets the shipping on every multi-item order, and Etsy’s own troubleshooting pages list the settings that make it charge too much or too little. Everything below is quoted from four Etsy Help Center pages: How to Set Up Shipping Information, How to Set Up Calculated Shipping, How to Offer Free Shipping and Updates to Handling and Package Fees, all read on 18 September 2026.
How does Etsy calculate shipping when a buyer orders more than one item?
For fixed-price shipping, Etsy "takes the listing with the most expensive One item price and then adds each Additional item price." Every listing carries both numbers. One item is the cost of shipping it alone; Additional item is what it adds when it rides along with something else from your shop, including a second copy of itself.
Etsy’s two worked examples, with a listing A set to $2.00 / $0.50 and a listing B set to $1.00 / $0.75:
| Order | What Etsy charges | Shipping total |
|---|---|---|
| A + B | A’s One item ($2.00) + B’s Additional item ($0.75) | $2.75 |
| A × 3 | A’s One item ($2.00) + two of A’s Additional item ($0.50 × 2) | $3.00 |
The same arithmetic carries on for bigger baskets: one One item price for the whole order, one Additional item price for every other unit in it. If you leave Additional item equal to One item, a buyer adding a second piece pays full shipping twice, and there is no combined-shipping discount at all.
What happens when the items use different shipping profiles?
The formula ignores profiles. Etsy says that when an item in the order "has a different shipping profile or no profile, the highest 'One item' shipping cost of all the items is charged," then each other item’s Additional item cost is added. Profiles do not split the basket into separate sub-orders; the whole order gets one One item price.
So a listing whose Additional item price is $0.00 ships free whenever it joins an item with a higher One item price, whichever profile that item uses. Listings with no profile at all still enter the sum, with the rates typed into each one by hand. Etsy’s fix is a filter: in Listings → More filters, pick No Shipping Profile to see every listing outside your profiles, then assign one through Editing options → Change shipping profiles.
Editing a profile, Etsy says, "will update on every listing you’ve applied it to," and "a listing can only be connected to one shipping profile." So a profile edit is a shop-wide price change for every listing on it. Check which listings sit on a profile before you change its Additional item rate.
What happens when an order mixes calculated and fixed shipping?
Etsy calculates postage for the calculated-shipping items first. For every fixed-price item it then adds only the Additional item cost, "regardless of what the costs are." A fixed-price listing never charges its One item price in a mixed order, even if it is the most expensive thing to post.
Say a mug uses calculated shipping and a sticker uses a fixed profile of $4.00 One item and $0.00 Additional item. A buyer who orders both pays the calculated postage for the mug and nothing for the sticker. The same holds the other way round: a heavy fixed-price item ordered with a light calculated one still ships at its Additional item rate.
Etsy offers two fixes: put every listing on calculated shipping, or raise the Additional item price on the fixed-price listings so it covers what they cost to post alongside something else.
Can you offer a combined-shipping discount with calculated shipping?
No. Etsy says "it isn’t possible to set discounted rates for listings with calculated shipping because the precise cost of shipping multiple items is calculated for you." Instead, Etsy packs the order: it picks "the smallest and cheapest package" for the mail class and the order’s total weight and dimensions.
Etsy’s troubleshooting page names the packing step as a cause of wrong calculated quotes. Etsy "splits the order into multiple packages unless all items can fit into one package," and every extra package adds postage. The inputs are the Item weight and Item size (when packed) fields on each listing, where Etsy wants the size "after it’s been prepared for packaging but not yet packaged (for example: folded, but not boxed)." Enter the boxed size instead, and two items that would share a box on your bench can be quoted as two parcels.
Etsy chooses from its default box sizes plus any Package preferences you add in Shipping settings, and you can turn the defaults off to use only your own boxes. If an item is bigger than every box you have set up, Etsy uses the item’s own dimensions as the package.
How are shipping upgrades charged on a multi-item order?
A fixed-price upgrade adds to the base shipping. Etsy’s example: a $5 base plus a $10 upgrade is charged as $15. If any one item in the basket offers an upgrade, the buyer can pick it, and "the cost will apply to every item in the order, even for items whose shipping profiles don’t offer the upgrade."
Free shipping does not cover an upgrade. Etsy says a buyer who picks one "will be charged for those even if their order qualifies for free shipping." The upgrade can have a Domestic price, an International price, or both. On calculated shipping, the upgrades on offer are the shipping services you ticked in the calculated profile rather than prices you type.
Upgrades have to be enabled in Shipping settings → Rates & upgrades before you can add them to a listing or a profile. Price each one knowing it lands on top of the base rate and may be charged across a whole basket.
Why did a buyer get faster shipping for free?
Because free shipping covers "the lowest-cost available mail class." When an order is heavier or larger than that class allows, Etsy moves it to a service that fits and keeps it free. Etsy’s example: an order over the dimensions for USPS First-Class goes out as USPS Priority Mail, at no charge to the buyer.
The fix is the same size field as above. Etsy suggests checking whether an item’s dimensions can fit your preferred mail class, and warns in the same answer that shipping dimensions "must be accurate, or you may incur a shipping label adjustment fee from the carrier." So shrink the number only if the packed item actually shrinks.
The opposite complaint, a US order that was not free, has its own cause. An order can miss your free shipping guarantee because the buyer’s account settings disqualify it: Etsy says the buyer must also have their region set to the US and their currency set to USD. The $35 guarantee itself, and what it does for ranking, is covered in does your Etsy shipping price affect search ranking.
Who can use calculated shipping on Etsy?
Sellers located in the US or Canada who ship with USPS, Global Postal Shipping or Canada Post. Everyone else sets fixed prices. Even inside those countries, calculated shipping is unavailable for letter mail and freight, for private custom listings, and, per Etsy, "not available yet on the Android version of Sell on Etsy."
Calculated shipping also no longer carries extra charges. Etsy removed the option to add handling and package fees to calculated shipping on March 19 (its notice first went up in January 2025), and removed existing fees automatically. Etsy’s suggestion is to move those costs into the item price "while keeping the total price the same." A shop that priced its items low because a handling fee used to sit on top has been absorbing that cost ever since, unless the item prices were raised.
One more setting changes the number the buyer sees. USPS calculated shipping can charge either the Etsy Shipping Label rate or the USPS retail rate, set in the Rates & upgrades tab. Etsy’s guidance is to charge the label rate if you buy labels on Etsy and the retail rate if you post at the counter. Custom orders can’t use calculated shipping at all; the limits of that route are in how Etsy custom orders and private listings work.
Can variations of one listing have different shipping costs?
No. Etsy says "variations don’t have separate shipping costs." A listing that offers a small print and a framed poster charges one shipping price for both. Etsy’s own answer for items that vary "greatly in size or weight" is to list each variation as a separate listing.
That is a pricing reason to split a listing, separate from the search reasons. The trade-offs on both sides, including what a split does to reviews and favorites, are in Etsy variations vs separate listings. The same one-of-each rule applies to origin: "Each listing can have only one shipping origin," so a shop fulfilling from two locations needs separate listings or separate shops.
A ten-minute check of your shipping settings
Each item below maps to one of Etsy’s documented causes of a wrong shipping charge. Run them in Shop Manager in this order:
- Listings → More filters → No Shipping Profile. Assign a profile to anything that shows up.
- Every fixed profile’s Additional item price. Is it what a second item really adds to your postage? $0.00 means free alongside any item with a higher One item price.
- Mixed shops. If some listings are calculated and some fixed, the fixed ones only ever charge Additional item in a mixed order.
- Item size (when packed). Folded, not boxed, or Etsy quotes extra parcels.
- Origin postal code on every calculated profile. Etsy names an old one as a cause of wrong single-item quotes.
- Everywhere Else. If a profile lists it, that listing ships worldwide. Etsy points to this row when an order arrives from a country you don’t ship to.
- Upgrades. Priced knowing they add to the base, apply across the whole order, and are still charged on free-shipping orders.
To change the profile on many listings at once, Etsy’s Editing options → Change shipping profiles works on a whole selection, one of the fields covered in what Etsy’s bulk editor can change.
Where the listing text comes in
Shipping settings decide what a buyer pays once they have found you. The words on the listing decide whether they find you. ListingLoom writes those to Etsy’s limits: a title inside 140 characters with the main keyword in the first 40, and 13 tags of up to 20 characters each. For a catalog, the bulk generator takes up to 25 products in one submission.
Before your next restock, price a test basket: the listing with your highest One item shipping price plus your lightest item. If the total surprises you, the number to change is the light item’s Additional item price.
