Etsy Gift Options for Sellers: Gift Wrap Is Priced Per Order, and Buyers Can Always Mark a Gift
2026-10-12
Etsy lets you charge for gift wrap, but only as one price per order, and that price can’t be set to 0. Etsy’s 6.5% transaction fee applies to the charge. You can’t stop a buyer marking an order as a gift, and when one does, the packing slip leaves out what they paid and adds a QR code that sends the recipient to your shop.
Everything below is quoted from Etsy’s Help Center, read on 12 October 2026: How to Offer Gift Services (last edited 10 April 2024), Packing Slips and Order Receipts for Sellers (21 March 2025), the buyer-side How to Buy a Gift on Etsy (18 December 2025) and I Received an Email About a Gift Teaser from Etsy (15 December 2025), plus Etsy’s fee articles and its Newly Crafted updates page. The gift services article is the oldest of these, so each fact below names the page it comes from.
What happens when a buyer marks an order as a gift?
Three things change. The packing slip “will automatically omit the breakdown of what the buyer paid.” It gains “a QR code that sends gift recipients straight to your shop to purchase more items.” And the buyer can have Etsy email the recipient a gift teaser, a page that shows the order’s shipping status and, if you added one, its tracking number.
The buyer marks the order with Mark order as a gift in their cart. After checkout they can create the teaser from Purchases and reviews: a message, an optional sneak peek of the item, and an optional audio or video message of up to 30 seconds and 100MB, which Etsy says can only be uploaded on Etsy.com in a desktop browser. They send it by email on a date they choose, or copy a link.
The recipient’s teaser lists the shipping status, “the estimated delivery date,” and “tracking information (if the seller has provided a tracking number),” and it stays viewable for 90 days after the purchase. When the buyer sends a teaser, the delivery estimate and the tracking number on your order are in front of the recipient as well as the buyer. How Etsy works out that estimate is covered in Etsy processing time and estimated delivery dates.
The packing slip article adds one option for gift orders: you “can also customize the slip to include a coupon code for use on a future purchase.” On a gift order, that coupon goes to whoever opens the package.
Can you stop buyers marking orders as gifts?
No. Etsy says: “You can’t disable a buyer’s ability to mark an order as a gift.” What you can switch off are the two services you provide, gift wrapping and gift messages. If neither is selected on a gift order, Etsy says “you don’t need to take any further action”: the price comes off the paperwork automatically.
You can also mark an order as a gift yourself, for a buyer who tells you some other way: Orders → select the order → More actions → Mark as gift. Etsy’s Newly Crafted page lists two Etsy Seller app changes under March 2026: you can mark an order as a gift after checkout from the app, and you can filter orders by gift status.
How does gift wrap pricing work on Etsy?
The setting is in Shop Manager → Settings → Options → Offer gift wrapping → Enable and set price. Etsy’s rule: “This fee will be applied to each order, not to individual items in the order. You can’t set the price to 0.” You can add an optional photo of your wrapping and an optional message telling the buyer how the item will be wrapped.
Two consequences follow from that wording:
- One charge, however many items. If you wrap each item separately, a five-item order costs you five wraps and pays you one gift wrap price.
- The setting can’t advertise free wrapping. A seller who wraps everything at no charge has no way to say so through it, and Etsy’s article gives no other route.
The article describes a single setting for the shop. The word “listing” does not appear in it, and it describes no per-listing price or switch. Etsy’s gifting checklist, quoted in how Etsy recommendations pick your listings, says that once gift wrap is enabled, shoppers see that you offer it on every listing in your shop.
What fees does Etsy charge on gift wrap?
The 6.5% transaction fee. Etsy’s What are the Fees and Taxes for Selling on Etsy? (last edited 7 October 2026) says the fee “applies to shipping and gift wrapping (if you charge your customers for those),” and its list of sale-based fees names “shipping and gift wrap transaction fees.” On a $5.00 gift wrap charge, that is about $0.33. The rest of the fee stack is in how much Etsy takes per sale.
Two other Etsy percentages are calculated on a total that includes gift wrap:
- The Regulatory Operating fee. Its own article (last edited 22 June 2026) says it is charged on “the item price plus shipping cost and gift wrap,” at rates from 0.05% (India) to 1.97% (Hungary).
- Share & Save works the other way. The 4% refund is “calculated the same way as Etsy’s transaction fees,” and Etsy’s worked example is an order “with shipping costs and/or gift wrapping services.” The program’s rules are in the Share & Save post.
The two fee pages disagree on one country. The Regulatory Operating fee article lists Hungary at 1.97%. The Fees and Taxes article, edited more recently, lists the fee for sellers in “the UK, France, Italy, India, Spain, Türkiye, Vietnam, and Canada,” with no Hungary. A Hungarian shop should check its own Payment account rather than trust either list.
On tax, Etsy’s Adding Sales Tax to Listings (last edited 21 July 2022) has one line: “Depending on where you live, you may need to set a sales tax rate if you offer gift wrapping services.” The same article tells sellers to ask a tax advisor for a final answer.
What does a gift message include, and what if gift messages are off?
With Offer gift messages set to Enabled in the same Options page, the buyer can write a message of up to 150 characters at checkout and may add their name. The packing slip prints it automatically, along with “your shop name” and “the item purchased.” Your job, per Etsy, is to print the slip and put it in the package.
What happens when the setting is off depends on which page you read:
- Packing Slips and Order Receipts: “If you offer it, the buyer can also include a gift message.”
- How to Offer Gift Services: “If you have gift messages disabled, you will see the buyer’s gift message on the order but do not need to take any action.” The same article says the message “is included in the gift teaser that is sent to the recipient.”
The first suggests no message exists unless you offer the service. The second says a message can reach your order page with the setting off. Neither page says whether that message prints on the slip. The buyer-side gift article lists the 150-character message among the gift options and does not say it depends on the shop. In practice, read the order for a gift message whatever your setting says.
Can a gift recipient contact you, and who can ask for a return?
Yes, the recipient can message you directly. Etsy: “Gift recipients can message you with questions about their order without contacting the buyer.” Those messages are badged “gift recipient” and “help request,” with the gift order’s details beside them. You can answer the recipient, or work with the buyer and tell the recipient you are doing so.
Returns stay with the buyer: “Only a buyer can initiate a return request, but you can coordinate an exchange of the item directly with the recipient if you choose.”
The recipient’s own help page describes a different route. It tells recipients to “reach out to the person who purchased it,” who “can message the seller,” and says “only the person who purchased the gift for you can start the return or exchange process.” The seller page lets you arrange an exchange with the recipient; the recipient page sends exchanges through the buyer, and it never mentions that recipients can message the shop themselves.
The “help request” badge has a known deadline elsewhere. Etsy’s How to Answer a Help Request from a Buyer (last edited 20 March 2023) gives you 48 hours to respond before “the buyer can open a case.” The gift services article contains neither the word “case” nor “48,” so whether a recipient’s message starts that clock is not stated. Answering within 48 hours costs nothing either way.
What do Etsy’s refund pages say about gift orders?
Nothing. The words “gift” and “wrap” appear zero times in How to Issue a Full or Partial Refund For an Order (last edited 21 March 2025), Refunds, Returns, and Exchanges for Sellers (7 May 2026) and What is Etsy’s Purchase Protection for Sellers? (9 July 2026). None of them says whether a refund should include the gift wrap charge. How refunds hand back the transaction fee in general is covered in do you get Etsy fees back when you refund.
Etsy’s gift options at a glance
| Option | Who sets it | What Etsy says it does | Can you turn it off? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mark order as a gift | Buyer, in the cart; or you, from Orders → More actions | Slip omits what the buyer paid and adds a QR code to your shop | No |
| Gift wrapping | You, in Settings → Options | One price per order, not 0; the 6.5% transaction fee applies | Yes |
| Gift messages | You, in Settings → Options | Up to 150 characters, printed with your shop name and the item | Yes, though a message may still show on the order |
| Gift teaser | Buyer, after checkout | Shows the recipient shipping status, delivery estimate and your tracking, for 90 days | No setting described |
| Recipient messages | Recipient | Badged “gift recipient” and “help request”; only the buyer can start a return | No setting described |
What don’t Etsy’s pages say about gift options?
- Whether gift wrap can differ by listing. The gift services article describes one shop setting and never mentions listings.
- Whether a gift message prints when gift messages are disabled.
- Whether a recipient’s help request starts the 48-hour case clock.
- Whether a refund should include the gift wrap charge. The three refund and protection pages above never mention it.
- Whether gift wrap applies to digital items. The gift services article never mentions them.
A checklist for gift orders
- Open Shop Manager → Settings → Options and note whether gift wrapping and gift messages are on.
- If you offer gift wrap, price it per order. It can’t be 0, and the 6.5% transaction fee applies to it.
- On every gift order, print the packing slip rather than your own receipt: that is the document Etsy says drops the price and carries the message.
- Check the order for a gift message even if gift messages are disabled.
- Add tracking when you can. The recipient’s gift teaser shows it.
- Answer a “gift recipient” message within 48 hours, and route any return through the buyer, the only one who can start one.
Where the listing comes in
Gift options only matter once a gift buyer finds the listing. Etsy’s April 2026 title guidance moved gifting phrases out of titles (covered in Etsy’s new title guidance), and its How to Use Tags article (last edited 21 April 2026) calls tags “great for aspirational or buyer-minded search terms (for example, ‘gift for her’).” The generator writes 13 tags of up to 20 characters, a title inside Etsy’s 140 characters, and a description. Its Story-driven & cozy tone writes copy that helps the buyer picture using, wearing or gifting the piece, and its filler check suggests a product-specific replacement for stock phrases such as “perfect gift for any occasion.” The bulk generator does the same for up to 25 products per submission.
