Changing a Buyer’s Shipping Address on Etsy: Three Policies Name the Address Given on Etsy, Two Help Pages Accept Messages
2026-10-02
You can change where an Etsy order ships in two ways: edit the address while buying an Etsy shipping label, or save the new address in a private note. Three Etsy policies name the address the buyer provided on Etsy. Two Help articles also name one agreed in Messages. Etsy’s own alternative is to cancel and have the buyer reorder.
Every rule below is quoted from ten Etsy Help Center articles and four policies (the Shipping Policy, the Purchase Protection Program for Sellers, the Cases Policy and the Seller Policy), all read on 2 October 2026. One section lists what none of those pages say, because two questions about a changed address have no published answer.
How do you change the shipping address on an Etsy order?
If you buy your label on Etsy, choose Get labels on the order, select Edit next to Ship to, save, and finish buying the label. If you ship another way, add a private note to the order with the new address. Etsy says: “Unless you use Etsy shipping labels, you can’t edit their address on Etsy.”
The label route only works if you complete the purchase. Etsy’s article says “address changes made without completing the shipping label purchase won’t be saved.” The private note route is Shop Manager, Orders, the order number, Add a private note, then Save. Etsy describes that note as “a reminder of the new address requested by the buyer.”
Etsy’s pages disagree on who can buy labels at all. The address article (last edited 21 March 2025) and the Shipping Policy both list sellers in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia. The label-buying article (last edited 30 September 2026) says “we offer shipping labels for sellers in Canada, the UK, and the US.” The edit sits inside the Get labels flow, so your own Orders page shows whether you have it.
Which address does Etsy expect you to ship to?
The one the buyer provided on Etsy. By selling, you agree to the Shipping Policy’s rule: “Ship to the shipping address provided by the buyer at checkout.” The Purchase Protection Program for Sellers makes it an eligibility requirement: “Ship the order to the address provided on Etsy.” The Cases Policy names the address given “at the time of purchase.”
| Etsy page | The address it names | Dated |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping Policy | “the shipping address provided by the buyer at checkout” | Effective 9 July 2026 |
| Purchase Protection Program for Sellers | “the address provided on Etsy” | Effective 9 July 2026 |
| Cases Policy | “the address provided by the buyer at the time of purchase on Etsy” | Effective 9 July 2026 |
| Help: How to Resolve a Case from a Buyer | “the address on the Etsy receipt or the address agreed upon in Etsy Messages” | Edited 8 June 2026 |
| Help: How to Cancel a Sale | The same sentence as the case article | Edited 20 November 2025 |
The Shipping Policy applies the same test to your proof of shipping. If an order does not arrive, “valid proof of shipping must show that the item actually was shipped and that it was sent to the shipping address provided by the buyer on Etsy.” The other conditions for cover are in Etsy Purchase Protection for sellers.
Does an address the buyer sends in Messages count?
Etsy gives two answers. The Cases Policy says: “Updates to processing times or shipping address through Messages or other informal channels will not qualify.” Two Help articles say a non-delivery case needs “proof the item was shipped to the address on the Etsy receipt or the address agreed upon in Etsy Messages.” None of the 14 pages read reconciles them.
The Cases Policy sentence sits in the list of expectations in Etsy’s Purchase Protection Program, directly after “delivered to the address provided by the buyer at the time of purchase on Etsy.” The Purchase Protection terms for sellers add a warning: “If your buyer provides an alternate shipping address through Messages, be mindful of fraud or scams.”
The case article also describes when a non-delivery case closes automatically: when no tracking was provided, or when tracking “shows that the package was delivered to the address on the Etsy receipt.” That sentence names the receipt address only.
There is one route where the address you ship to is also the address entered at checkout, and Etsy names it in two places. The address article says “another option is to cancel the order and have the buyer repurchase with a correct address.” The Purchase Protection terms say you “may choose to cancel and refund the order and ask the buyer to purchase the item again with the corrected shipping address.”
What does Etsy tell sellers to do when a buyer’s address is wrong?
Message the buyer first. Etsy’s instruction is: “Always contact the buyer before substantially changing their shipping information.” Etsy cannot fill the gap for you, because it “doesn’t have buyer information that isn’t submitted on an order.” Once the buyer confirms the address, you can use it to buy postage, or cancel and ask them to reorder.
Buyers are sent to you for this. Etsy’s buyer article says that if an order is marked Not Shipped, the buyer should “contact the shop to update your address on the order or cancel your order.” For a new address in a different country, the same article tells the buyer the order has to be canceled and placed again.
If the buyer never replies, Etsy says “you can cancel the order.” Canceling gives the buyer a full refund, and Etsy “automatically credits you for the related listing and transaction fees.”
Two details from the cancellation article matter here: request refunds for any unused labels before you cancel, and “canceling a sold-out item doesn’t put the item back in your shop,” so renew it before the buyer comes back to reorder. The fee side is covered in do you get Etsy fees back when you refund.
Which address fixes can you make without asking the buyer?
Formatting fixes. If an address line has too many characters, Etsy says “you can move some information to the second address line.” Characters with non-standard accents or punctuation can be replaced “with non-accented characters without contacting the buyer.” Etsy does not define a substantial change, and that replacement is the only fix it explicitly clears without contact.
The label-buying article lists formatting problems among the reasons you may be unable to buy or print a label:
- Emojis or special characters (Etsy’s examples are ñ, é and ü): remove them and try again.
- An address in a non-Latin alphabet: Etsy says to “translate the address into a compatible language.”
- An address longer than the carrier’s character limit: abbreviate where possible.
A missing phone number is a separate case. Etsy “doesn’t collect the buyer’s phone number,” so if your carrier needs one, ask the buyer in Messages and say it is for delivery.
What if you already bought the label or shipped the order?
A purchased label cannot be edited. Etsy says: “If you need to change the buyer’s shipping address after buying a label, you need to request a refund for that label and then buy a new label.” Etsy’s refund article gives an unused label 15 or 30 days, depending on the carrier.
Request the label refund before anything else. Etsy’s refund article says that if you plan to cancel the order, “be sure to request your shipping label refund first,” and that a refund request cannot be undone. The carrier-by-carrier windows, including the ones where Etsy’s pages disagree, are in Etsy shipping label adjustments and refund windows.
Once the parcel has shipped, Etsy’s pages hand the problem back to you and the buyer. The buyer article tells a buyer whose order is marked Shipped to check your shop policies, contact you “to request a replacement or refund,” and “work with your seller and the shipping service directly.” None of the ten Help articles read for this post describes redirecting a parcel that is already in transit.
What don’t Etsy’s pages say about address changes?
Two questions have no published answer in the 14 pages read for this post: whether an address edited at label purchase still counts as “the address provided on Etsy,” and who pays when a parcel comes back because the buyer’s address was wrong. Each absence below was checked by searching the page text for the term, not by skimming.
- No page connects the label edit to Purchase Protection. Etsy’s two address articles do not mention Purchase Protection. The Purchase Protection terms and the Cases Policy do not mention editing an address. No page read says which address Etsy compares your tracking against after an edit.
- Returned parcels are not mentioned. “Return to sender,” “returned to sender” and “undeliverable” appear zero times in the four policies and ten articles. An eleventh article, on Global Postal Shipping labels, has the one mention found: an undeliverable item “will be returned directly to your address.”
- The Help page leaves the address rule out. Etsy’s Purchase Protection for Sellers Help article (last edited 9 July 2026) lists eight eligibility conditions, and the word “address” does not appear in it. The requirement to ship to the address provided on Etsy is in the policy itself.
The Seller Policy does not settle it either. Its four mentions of an address concern buyer personal data and off-platform transactions, not where an order ships. If a case turns on an edited address, ask in the case log which address Etsy is using. No page read for this post answers that in advance.
A check to run before you ship to a different address
Etsy’s article on lost packages asks you to review buyer Messages before shipping, because buyers “may have provided an updated shipping address.” The steps below follow from the pages quoted above.
- Read the order’s Messages before you buy the label. A label cannot be edited after purchase.
- Decide whether the fix is formatting or substance. Etsy lets you move overflow text to the second address line, and says accented characters can be replaced without contacting the buyer. For anything substantial, Etsy says to contact the buyer first.
- Get the new address confirmed in Etsy Messages. Etsy says “address edits should be confirmed with the buyer via Messages,” and two Help articles say a non-delivery case needs proof the item went to the receipt address “or the address agreed upon in Etsy Messages.”
- Know what the policies say. The Cases Policy says an address update through Messages “will not qualify,” and the Purchase Protection terms name the address provided on Etsy.
- Consider cancel and reorder. Etsy names that option in the address article and in the Purchase Protection terms, and its buyer article requires it for a different country.
- If you cancel, refund any label first and renew a sold-out listing. Then the buyer can buy again with the right address at checkout.
Where the listings come in
Address changes happen after the sale, and ListingLoom does not touch orders. It works on the listing: the generator drafts a title inside Etsy’s 140 characters with the main keyword in the first 40, 13 tags of up to 20 characters, and a description. The bulk generator takes up to 25 products per submission.
